I've been enjoying the new 52 Catwoman. It's not particularly great, but it's fun. I was just reading an article about it over at Comics Alliance (a bit behind, to be certain), and I don't know if I'm remembering incorrectly or what. However, when I read the first issue, it didn't click in my brain that half-naked Catwoman = sexy time. Maybe I've just seen too much porn in my time. It really did seem more like a moment of "I need the fuck out of here."
And I was more struck by the hilarity that Catwoman is, in fact, a crazy cat lady. This was my first Catwoman comic.
Having said that, the article did make some really good points about the way women are depicted in comics. Especially the point about costumes. I keep seeing jokes about it, and it's really hard to not notice now. Also, the idea that depicting sexually liberated women is not just having them fuck everybody is a really good point.
For me, I don't think the sex scene between Batman and Catwoman was as pointless as it was made out to be. It seemed to be about showing there's this sexy relationship, but it's a little awkward, and really kinda insane. Which comes up a few issues later, and explains why Batman is so conflicted about letting her get away.
But, I could be wrong. I might not be able to spot objectification of women very easily because it's something I've studied nor do I own a vagina. It could also be because I'm not looking for it.
My first post, so nobody will probably read this. But, if anyone does, I'd love to hear some peoples opinions. However, rudeness will be ignored, but kindness, honesty, and reasonableness will always be listened to thought about.
